First a scarf appeared in ancient China. But then he, certainly, was not a fashionable accessory. The ancient Chinese warriors utillized scarfs with a practical purpose: tied around a neck the piece of matter to protect it from a cold and wind. In 1974 archaeologists found out a monumental burial place, related to times of rule of the Chinese emperor Cin’ Shikhuand. In a tomb there were found 7500 figurines of warriors terracotta. Each on a neck had a scarf.


It was 58 year B.C., the predecessor of today’s warm scarfs appeared in Ancient Rome. On Latin he was named focale. In the days of French revolution it was fashionable to carry the enormous starched shawls from a muslin, which once or twice wrapped around round a neck. Frenches carried wide shawls from a white matter. Revolutionaries, as usual, differed: as a token of objecting against white shawls began to carry a black tie («black, as a curse»). In France these enormous shawls named «incredible». To carry «incredible», certain skill was required. Private lessons on which taught an art to tie and carry these shawls were even popular in Paris.

In the middle of XIX age a new name appeared at a scarf. A small masculine scarf in France was named «сache nez», that means a «hiding-place for a nose». I that time a muffler was carried by young dandies, trying the unusual look to enter a protest against narrow-minded tastes. In XIX age a muffler was sewn from the figured thin fabrics of bright flowers, after woolen mufflers entered in a fashion in a cage. In Russia of that time attitude is toward fashion plates, to carrying a muffler, there was negative. This scarf was even perceived as a sign of dissidence.

In the middle of XX age a fashion on scarves was revived by Marchello Mastroyani. The famous Italian actor belonged to the number those film stars which took enjoyment from wearing scarves, with large artistry laying them round a neck.

At the beginning of XXI age it was triumphal procession of scarf on world podiums. Practically any designer had this fashionable accessory in collection. There are great number of variants . Everybody will be able to choose an exactly that scarf which will like you and express your individuality.

Few more advices:

  • Thick warm scarf is the best, that is thought of for the winter. But a woolen scarf is absolutely unacceptable for official measures and carrying with a city overcoat.
